With Seth Watkins. How can you cut
your energy bill and live more
sustainably without sacrificing
your quality of life? What's new

Long Island Green Energy
Summit on Friday January 25th:
11 am
to 1pm at the I.B.E.W. Local #25
Labor Hall located at 370 Motor
Parkway in Hauppauge.
Our goal is to develop Long Island
as an “Advanced Energy Corridor.”
Long Island has already transitioned
from an agricultural and suburban
economy in the 1950’s to the
“defense capital of America” in the
1980’s. Today, our region has the
inherent infrastructure, skilled
labor base, and research and
development capabilities to be a
center for advanced energy progress
in the United States. Contact
Congressman Israel's office for more
information.

What are the possibilities
for abrupt and dangerous climate
changes? What should society do
about global warming? How serious
is this issue from a scientific
perspective? How do contemporary
philosophers struggle with the
moral implications of this issue?
What are the economic costs? These
and related questions are examined
by distinguished C.W. Post

DiVenere (Earth & Environmental
Science) in a panel discussion

– “Perspectives on Re-Powering
Long Island” Location:
Hillwood Cinema, Hillwood Commons.
C.W. Post Campus, LIU, Brookville.
Long Island generates
electricity using old, inefficient
and polluting power plants.
Re-powering would allow the region
to significantly improve the
environmental and economic
efficiencies of its plants, but
there are substantial costs
involved. An analysis of this
topic is led and moderated by Dr.
Matthew Cordaro, Associate
Professor in C.W. Post’s College of
Management, Director of the Center
for Management Analysis and highly
regarded utility expert. Joining
him are distinguished
representatives from the political
and governmental agency sectors:
Kevin Law, LIPA President and CEO,
who was formerly the Chief Deputy
County Executive and General
Counsel for the Suffolk County
Executive; and Babylon Town
Supervisor Steve Bellone, who has
spearheaded a number of energy
initiatives and has been cited by
Newsday as a leader of the

science of climate change is one of
the most complex challenges
physical scientists have to deal
with, and because of its societal
and political implications it is
frequently misrepresented and
poorly understood in the media and
public discourse. I will attempt to
explain how some of the science of
climate change is done, how it is
evaluated and what can (and can't)
be concluded. Specifically, I will
discuss the role of climate models
- numerical laboratories for the
Earth system - and their successes
and continuing problems in
understanding the past, present and
future of climate change."

Acidification and the Global Carbon
Cycle:” Cindy Lee, SUNY
Distinguished Professor, School of
Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.
Coral reefs and calcareous shells
are in danger of depletion. One of
the few natural processes that
removes carbon dioxide from the
ocean’s surface waters is the
sinking of particles to the deep
sea. These particles carry organic
carbon with them that is derived
from the surface plants and animals
in the ocean. Professor Lee has
studied the organic chemistry of
the oceans for the past 35 years.
